The University at Albany (State University of New York, Albany, NY) invites applications and nominations for the position of Project Archivist. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections and Archives at the University Libraries, this is a two-year grant-funded position. This position is needed to fulfill the following responsibilities for a Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives grant: arrange and describe the manuscript collections according to standard archival practices for DACS, including surveying the collections in order to establish a proposed arrangement; identify media and determine preservation measures; physically reorganize the collection in accordance with the arrangement plan; supervise students; create finding aids and MARC records.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in library science with a concentration or specialization in archival management from an ALA-accredited program or foreign equivalent, or a master’s degree in archival studies. The graduate degree must be from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
Demonstrated ability to arrange and describe archival collections
Working knowledge of practices and techniques of archival descriptive standards, particularly EAD, MARC, and DACS, as well as preservation practices
Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to clearly explain archives issues to project staff and the public
Superior organizational and time management skills
Strong attention to detail
Ability and willingness to lift or shift boxes weighing up to 50 lbs.
