Status: Two Positions for a Two year grant funded project

George Eastman House is seeking candidates for two Project Archivists in its Motion Picture Department. These are full-time, grant funded positions for two years. The Motion Picture Department at George Eastman House preserves over 30,000 film titles in all film gauges and a variety of tape formats. Its Stills, Posters and Paper Collections contain over 4,000,000 individual historic artifacts of motion picture culture including posters, publicity stills, historical documents, music scores and cue sheets, lobby cards, scripts, pre-cinema artifacts, nitrate film frames, audio collections, and manuscript collections.

Position Duties:

The Project Archivist reports to the Archivist of the Stills, Posters and Paper Collections, and will work on manuscript and personal collections. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Preparing folder-level inventories for manuscript and personal collections;
Assessing the condition of materials and re-housing items or groups of items where needed;
Researching biographical information about the manuscripts’ creators;
Writing descriptive finding aids according to current archival standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent), with a concentration in archives;
Experience working with manuscript collections and writing descriptive finding aids;
Experience with Encoded Archival Description (EAD);
Knowledge of Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS);
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Strong knowledge of international motion picture history;
Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

Preferred:

Knowledge of basic conservation and handling best practices for a range of mixed materials such as paper, photographic, and magnetic items;
A solid proficiency in Word and Excel (FileMaker Pro a plus);
Proven meticulousness, accuracy, sense of detail;
Excellent organizational skills, flexibility and ability to multi-task;
An exemplary professional demeanor with strong interpersonal skills.
